Gaming on AmigaOS 4.1: Powermanga (TLK-Games / Frank Menzel)

Welcome to a new game review here on the Gaming on AmigaOS 4.1 blog!

Today we’re going to have a look at a shoot’em up game called Powermanga. It was developed by TLK Games and ported to AmigaOS 4 by Frank Menzel.

The game will most likely run on all AmigaOS 4 configurations, including emulation in WinUAE.

Installation

You’ll be happy to know that the game is free to download. 🙂 You can get it from OS4Depot by clicking on the link below:

Once you have downloaded it, head on over to its directory and right-click on the file. Select “extract to” and then choose the destination. To start the game, navigate to the drawer you unpacked it to and double click on the icon to launch it. The game will start right away.

Gameplay

So, what kind of game is Powermanga?

It is an arcade styled 2D shoot’em up game with a lot on the menu, including various kinds of power-ups (increase firepower, health, speed of the craft) and a big variety of enemies.

You are in control of a spaceshop and your goal is basically to avoid being hit by enemy forces by taking as many of them out as possible, so that you can advance to the next level. According to the authors, Powermanga has 41 levels, so there is quite a challenge to overcome if you’d like to try to complete the game.

Now, let’s have a look at some screenshots and how the game plays. 🙂

After a nice intro animation, we are presented with the title screen of the game.
Here is the main menu. The option on top, which is spinning around, starts the game. Number two says order, but will only display information that the game is free. 🙂 A nice touch. You can view the credits by selection “About”.
The main programmer of the game.
The one who ported Powermanga to AmigaOS 4.
Ok, here we go. The game starts. 🙂
A bit further into Powermanga, I’ve managed to acquire a few upgrades.
There are gems to pick up and a bigger enemy approaching on the right hand side of the screen.
Massive upgrades! Check out the ship. Pretty decent firepower if you ask me!
It’s time for the big boss.
When the game ends, you can (if your score is good enough) enter your initials in the high-score list. As you can see I did not do very well in terms of points, but will be better the next I hope. 😉

I must say I’m very positively surprised with this game! It has a good feel to it and it plays well. The graphics are excellent, colorful and stylish. Plenty of enemies and challenges to keep it interesting, so will for sure play it more in the future. 🙂 If you like shoot’em up games like this, I recommend you give it a try on your AmigaOS 4 setup. I also noticed, while checking out the homepage of the game, that the Linux version was updated in 2015 with some fixes. Maybe the AmigaOS 4 version will get an update too? Time will show. 🙂

Thanks so much for reading and for visiting the Gaming on AmigaOS 4.1 blog. See you in another post!
